Clarno Unit – John Day Fossil Beds National Monument

Clarno is the most remote and the least visited of the Fossil Beds.  It is along Oregon Highway 218 that runs from Antelope to Fossil.  The road is narrow but in good shape.  The unit is identified with the palisade formation from the volcanic lahars that buried a tropical forest millions of years ago.  Some of the vegetation has been cast in rock and is clearly visible, you just need to look.
